Inguinal hernia
An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of an organ, usually the intestine, through a weak spot in the abdominal wall in the inguinal region (groin area).
Symptoms:
  • Lump, bulge, mass, or swelling: In the groin or scrotum, which may be visible or palpable when standing or coughing.
  • Pain or discomfort: Can range from mild to severe, especially when lifting heavy objects, coughing, or doing physical activity.
  • Feeling of heaviness.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms: In cases where the hernia is large and contains intestine, there may be nausea or vomiting if strangulation occurs—this is a surgical emergency.

An umbilical hernia is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through an opening or defect in the abdominal wall near the navel.

Symptoms

Patients may suspect its presence upon noticing a mass or bulge in the navel area. It is usually more noticeable when coughing, laughing, or straining. The navel may appear not completely sunken. Sometimes, it may cause pain or discomfort in the affected area.

In cases where the hernia is large and contains intestine, there may be nausea or vomiting if strangulation occurs—this is a surgical emergency.

Hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves from the abdominal cavity into the thoracic cavity through a weakened esophageal hiatus.

Most hernias are asymptomatic. However, the larger the hernia, the more likely symptoms are to appear.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is the condition where stomach contents flow back into the esophagus (reflux) and trigger symptoms.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of GERD are:

  • Heartburn, described by the patient as a burning sensation behind the sternum that can rise from the stomach area to the throat.
  • Regurgitation, which is the passage of stomach contents to the mouth without effort or gagging.

Other symptoms that may occur include chest pain, burping, bad breath, or respiratory symptoms. Symptoms can worsen after meals or during nighttime rest.
